Happy Birthday, Friend

Dear Jessica,

Though we now live apart, my best years were spent with you. This year you turn 25, move on to a new job and get married. I can’t imagine a busier time of accomplishments! You’re pulling it off fabulously.

I hope you know that there is never a moment that I doubt that you will be there for me whenever I need it and I’m not sure many people are lucky enough to find that in a friend. With so many memories behind us, it’s hard to imagine how many more are in front of us.

Just a few years ago, we freshman-year-cried to each other locked in a bathroom making promises that we have kept as they have unfolded over time. It only more and more reassures me that we really are each other’s soul mates.

Happy birthday.

xo,

Megan

Girl Crush: Mindy Kaling

Recently I finished reading Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects (not, I repeat, NOT a book for those that are easily disturbed and/or can’t make it through an entire episode of Law & Order: SVU), and looking for something a little…lighter to occupy myself on my bus ride to work. Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (and Other Concerns) fit the bill.

Now usually I have my hands full with my gym duffle and my coffee, so reading on the bus isn’t a daily activity and with this particular book, I tend to want to laugh out loud and we all know that that isn’t proper bus etiquette. The train to and from Milwaukee, however, is primetime…time.

What I have found through reading her book is that 1) she’s hilarious and 2) we would be amazing friends. I was already a fan of hers from her time as a writer, producer and co-star on The Office, but now it is just cemented. Her new show The Mindy Project is on FOX and, while I would laugh from time to time, I was having trouble getting into it. Since diving into the book, I’ve realized she talks exactly the way she writes and that is directly translated onto the small-screen. My appreciation has bloomed.

Even reading her blog posts right now makes me feel like I’m reading something that I would write. I/we/she am/are/is so funny! Don’t confuse this for me thinking that “I could be a writer and famous like Mindy!” Nah. I’m more concerned with how I will stop myself from not eating these three boxes of Girl Scout cookies I came into today. I feel like she would support me in just devouring them now and getting it over with. I’ll dedicate a box of Thin Mints to you, girl.

When I’m 31

I just made it to 25 and it’s going swimmingly. However, there’s a certain special lady in my life that turned 31 today and I wanted to put it out into the universe that if I am even half as amazing as her by then, then I’ll consider myself quite fabulous.

Happy birthday, Kate. I’m #psyched for more baby bump pictures and if I were to throw you a birthday party, it would be as lovely as the ideas I have floating in my head for my girlfriend’s bachelorette party, or rather, hen party.

Maybe I would bake you that cake. It would be funfetti of course. Hugs and kisses.

Birthday Outfit

Yes, indeedy. I am a whole 25 years old as of yesterday. It was a great day and I am lucky to have such great friends and family. Even better is the fact that Thanksgiving is just around the corner!

Now back to the topic at hand, in case you are wondering, Emma Stone and I do not have the same birthday. Her downright fabulous outfit from the Vogue Awards simply inspired me to create a similar version for my own stores. I love buying outfits for special occasions and Emma’s outfit made me wish that I had seen it earlier so it could have been my birthday outfit. It’s so chic and a fun spin on the classic peplum and pencil skirt.

The sequin skirt was easy enough to find on Polyvore, the greatest site in the world to find an article of clothing. I knew I wouldn’t want to spend too much on this sequin skirt because it’s not exactly something that you can wear anywhere. This one at Oasis was exactly what I was looking for. Done.

The strapless peplum top was a little more difficult to track down. Emma is wearing Burberry so clearly the construction is exquisite. I flirted with both blue and black and still can’t decide, which would actually be the winner. With either color, I absolutely would snazz it up with some navy or black ribbon.

These options from Lulu’s may be a little…too much. I’m never one to shy away from a deep-V, but when you’re already getting a hard-to-wear skirt, it’s not practical to make it a hard-to-wear outfit.

Topshop is a master of the peplum. I have yet to snag one of their myriad of options, but this one stood out to me as a texture-on-texture option. The lace panel at the bottom  is not lined so the sequins would sparkle through.

Okay, so, I may have spoken too soon. This lovely thing from ASOS may be my winner. Even though it isn’t strapless, it’s still navy and at least satin-like. Bonus points: it’s on sale.

You all didn’t know that you were in suspense, but you are. I already have a super sweet birthday outfit planned. Did I also mention that I am weird with my occasion outfits and I won’t show it on to anyone much like a bride hiding her dress? You’ll have to wait until the sequel to this post to find out what it is!

Come to think of it – and I understand that it may be premature but – I now think that I’ve found my New Year’s Eve outfit…

In My Dreams

In my dreams I am nowhere near this fabulous.

That is all.

Honorary Girl Crush: Nora Ephron

How sad, how sad. Nora Ephron, writer extraordinaire, passed away on Tuesday. She was responsible for some of my most favorite movies of all time. She was hilariously brilliant and all-around amazing. This article written by Lisa Belkin honors Ephron and makes me want to curl up with a good movie and a box of Thin Mints like old times. She was a trailblazer and helped us fall in love over and over.
