American Girl in Paris: Part Deux

My own delicious pic

(If you missed part une check it out here before you read. You can’t just jump into the second Harry Potter book. You’ll miss all the juice from book one!)

So if you’ve continued the journey with me from earlier this week, we’re still in Paris and we’re still obsessed with ModCloth. Welcome to part deux! I took the above pic at a café near Notre Dame. It is a true café au lait. Yes, it was as good as it looks. I have already covered off on the outfit itself. Now it’s time for outerwear and accessories! Like I said before, this trip to Paris will be taking place during the springtime so it’s not dress-and-no-cardigan weather. Simple layers will be key and it will finally be more acceptable to start bringing the brights out of the wings and onto center stage (unless you’re like me and buck some of those fashion traditions).

Classic: Trench, Afternoon Uptown Coat, $89.99.

For the classic coat? A trench, duh! This one is just a little more fancy with the contrasting piping around the edges.

Modern: Coat, High-Ranking Style Coat, $99.99.

Another mullet-themed piece of clothing…I don’t have a mullet so I’m not sure what could be sparking this. I was drawn to this coat because I thought it would make a great and appealing visual to have the crinkled fabric of the dress I picked in part une peeking out of the front, plus it’s not the type of coat you see every day.

Classic: Earrings, Cheer and Charm Earrings, $13.99.

These are adorable little earrings with…pearls! And bows!

Modern: Ring, Earn Your Wing Ring, $17.99.

Instead of earrings I chose another ring. Multiple rings and/or bangles is all the rage. This ring reminded me of one that I have that is the bottom detailing of a spoon wrapped around into a ring. I picked it up at a fair in my hometown and it oozes the handiness that I wish I had.

Classic: Scarf, Sunset the Mood Scarf, $24.99.

If you thought [insert item of clothing here] was important in Europe, prepare to think differently. (PS these are all my opinions so they may not be 100% accurate so bear with me) The scarf is the ultimate. Everyone has one. Everyone is doing it. Invest in a cool scarf and don’t forget to pick one up while you’re there. Both of these scarves have two complimentary colors in them and make you look twice. I really like the light/navy blue for spring and when you take off your coat, it will match your dress!

Modern: Scarf, Two-tone Desserts Scarf, $29.99.

To me, this scarf screams, “I’m soft and comfortable and fabulous! WEAR ME!” So I say, “Okay, okay, Scarf. Calm down please and ask nicely next time. You’re kind of bossy, but I kind of dig it. Thank you.”

Classic: Purse, City Market Pouch in Nut, $49.99.

A cross-body bag will suit you while traveling anywhere. Your hands are free for touching souvenirs and yummy pastries. This is a classic (using that word a lot, sorry. That’s what it is!) color and silhouette. The bright buckles and stiching around the edge will allow it to transcend any decade of style.

Modern: Purse, Grow and Prosper Shoulder Bag, $52.99.

You could have easily taken this out of your grandma’s closet when she was napping. This is a good thing! The unique pattern makes it a total keeper. Grandma will never remember that you borrowed it and forgot to return it. You can be forgetful, too. On another note, be careful when you wear this type of bag. Keep it in front of you at all times to avoid the rampant pick-pocketers. Luckily for you, I saw many femmes wearing their bags in the front. No odd-looking behaviors for you (except when you realize that you laugh at a much higher frequency than any of the natives)!

Classic: Sunglasses, Shade-y Lady Sunglasses, $11.99.

Tortoiseshell, tortoiseshell, tortoiseshell and sunnies. That is all.

Modern: Sunglasses, You Can See Clearly Now Sunglasses, $29.99.

I want to take this spin on the avaitor. My eyes will thank me for this. Plus, I’m anti-crows feet.

And here the journey ends, my friends. You’ve seen two outfits of two different, yet similar (!), styles that would both be perfect for a fictional or real trip to Paris. Thanks to my fictional friends at ModCloth (and Google Translate) for making it so easy to do. I hope you enjoyed yourself! Au revoir et bon voyage!

Scarf You Down

Image c/o Cup of Jo

Oh joy, oh rapture! What do I not love about this girl? I don’t love that I’m not her best friend. From her polka dot tights to her infinity scarf that is scarfing her down (yes, pun, yes) to that TOP KNOT/bang combo. I told you those would be huge (see here and here). Stick with me. We’re goin’ places.

To that satchel and those Oxfords too. Just bravo. Spoiler alert: now you know what I’ll be wearing/looking exactly like tomorrow.

Happy December!

J. Crew Boots for You

Image c/o J. Crew

Wowzers. Sorry for the delay in posting. Actual work is getting the best of me and with all the travel I have really taken a backseat. I hope this will make it up to you. That is, if you’re even reading this, which is dumb to say because you clearly are if you’re reading this…I’ll stop.

The brick and mortar J. Crew is best to visit during the dead of winter. By then, it’s resort wear time. I find that the second you step inside, all bundled up in your parka, you immediately regret that you do not own a beach house because, according to J. Crew’s walls and tables, you should be on vacation you mouth-breather. I enviously gaze at the skirts and critter flip-flops and internally weep. It at least gets you excited for the warmer months however far away they are in actuality. #firstworldproblems

My latest obsession is filling the holes in my wardrobe. Funny how I see my wardrobe as a bottomless pit, always eager for just one more piece. I recently purchased a pair of ankle boots like the pair seen above from J. Crew. I am digging the laces not-too-fussy-or-stuffy detailing. I decided to build an outfit around it from the ample archives and some from the sale section of the site. These boots make me want to go totally artsy, upscale hipster.

Let’s start from the top. Ba dum chhh.

Tank, Whisper Linen Striped Tank in Dusty Sage. J. Crew, SALE: $24.99

This tank is super lightweight and a good base for building on all your layers. I am about stripes. I just am.

Jacket, Utility Fleece Sherpa-Lined Hoodie in Bench Green, J. Crew, SALE: $88

Okay, so maybe I play for both teams. If it means I’ll get what I want, I’m not above…shopping in the men’s department. They usually have the smaller items that might not survive the onslaught of crazed women who are swooping them the moment they go on sale up while you’re asleep. Plus, men’s clothes tend to be really comfy because they don’t know how to sacrifice for fashion like we do. And to top you off…

Image c/o J. Crew

Puffer, Excursion Quilted Vest in Black, J. Crew, $98.00

Sorry this one isn’t on sale (yet). Every lady should have a puffer vest. It very rarely makes you look rounder if that’s your fear. As long as it doesn’t look supremely tight after you have all your layers on, I say you’re golden. And warm.

Image c/o J. Crew

Jeans, Downtown Skinny Jean  in Pearly Blue Wash, J. Crew, SALE: $69.99

These jeans will be perfect for tucking into the top of the boots and will ensure that the whole look is not too dark. Don’t forget some patterned socks! Fun socks for me are like fancy underwear for most. You may not see them, but I know that I’m wearing socks that have cows on them and that makes me feel sexy.

Image c/o J. Crew

Bracelet, Crystal Brulee Bracelet in Rouge, J. Crew, $45.00

Scarf, Metallic Snood, J. Crew, $49.50

These last two are just icing on the cake. I am needing the bling to remind me that I’m still a girly girl despite the hard exterior of the boots. And the snood is fabulous because it’s called a “snood”, people. That’s awesome.

Jacket Prep

ideeli, Knitted Dove Megan Military Coat in Ivory, $35 Sale

This morning I walked outside to my carpool and felt the slightest hint of a chill in the air. In true human fashion (gearing up for things that are far from happening, e.g. Halloween decorations at Michael’s in August, anything to do with Christmas ever, etc.), my mind began spinning just thinking about all the wonderful things I love about Fall despite the fact that it is still obviously summertime.

I have narrowed down my top favorite things about the fall and they are (in no particular order) as follows: Pumpkin Spice lattes at Starbucks, riding boots, coats, the smell of the air, football, and my birthday. Oh, and Thanksgiving. Oh, and about 100 different other reasons. My immediate thought this morning was, “I can’t wait to wear my new jacket!” (see above). I bought it on ideeli and it’s perfect and it was super on sale (plus, it’s a Megan coat. I also have a Megan dress from Forever 21. Awesome). But I’m trying to pump the brakes on my excitement and enjoy what is left of Summer.

I rotate coats often and think it’s best to have a variety, especially when you live somewhere that has finicky weather like I do. I have to watch the weather religiously or else I go to work in a cardigan and leave work to a snowstorm wishing I had a parka.

Just because you stock up on jackets doesn’t mean you have to stock up your credit card bill buying all of them. Online sales are happening everywhere. You just have to take the time to search a little and find what works for you. Your budget and your chattering teeth will thank you.

Forever 21, Relaxed Open Blazer, $27.80

Perfect for: transitioning from summer to fall.

Great with: a scarf and your last-stitch effort to wear all your t-shirts.

Patagonia, Better Sweater Jacket in Lagoon, $129

Perfect for: those days that get as warm as a late-summer evening, or even to layer under a thinner jacket. In college, I went as far as to layer it under a puffy vest. #bold

Great with: said puffy vest or just straight up, no chaser.

Burberry Trench Coat

Perfect for: the occasional rainy day or your need to look fly.

Great with: anything. A trench is a staple and crosses over all seasons and occasions. I got a cheapy slash workhorse trench at Old Navy. Then I stumbled upon a 1980s vintage Burberry trench at an antique store (aaaah!). So now I have the best of both worlds.

Net-a-porter, Derek Lam Cashmere-blend Cape, $1,990

Perfect for: a blustery day, window shopping, drinking coffee.

Great with: a patterned long-sleeved shirt, or elbow-length gloves. I’m told Forever 21 has pretty awesome capes. I am going to keep my eyes peeled for one in a hunter green. Ooooo.

The North Face, Women's Arctic Parka, $299

Perfect for (if you live where I live): every single day of Winter until mid-Spring.

Great with: layers and layers of clothing, wool gloves and matching scarf. Hood up, of course.
